2nd Grade Vocabulary

Vocabulary Words

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

We spend a lot of time working to build a high academic vocabulary.  An academic vocabulary is the words used to learn.  They are the words that are used in schools, textbooks and tests.  We do a lot of things to learn these vocabulary words.  We learn about them in the context of our regular curriculum.  We also record each word in our Really Good Vocabulary Journal where we record the definition from the dictionary, we illustrate it and use it in a descriptive sentence.  After the word has been around for a while and we're feeling pretty comfortable with it, we'll use them in fun learning game shows.  Cool
It is a great idea to reinforce these words at home as well as at school which is why Mrs. Hipple has listed not only the word but the definition as used in class.  We'll focus on an average of 5 vocabulary words weekly.  Why?  Because research shows that 5 is the ideal amount for children to truly learn with the objective of retention.  Because retention is our goal, we will revisit these words throughout the year.
Remember, the vocabulary words count as bonus words on the weekly spelling test.  (They can't hurt you but they can help raise your grade. Wink
