Reading Practice At Home

As you read with your child for homework, please try to do a combination of reading TO your child and having your chld read TO or WITH you.  When you are sharing a book together, it will help if you or your child tracks the words underneath as they are read, by pointing a finger under each word.  This helps your child to learn about how print works, directionality, and letter-to-sound correspondence.
Reading pictures is one form of reading, so encourage your child to use the pictures to help them figure out what unknown words might be.  Pictures are also good for predictions and inferences about the story or characters within the story.
Most of all, enjoy reading together- even if it is the same beloved book over and over!  You are building the foundation for your child to become an independent reader of confidence.
