Reading

We are exploring Poetry this month and focusing on fluency.  We’re especially enjoying the poetry of Jack Prelutsky.  Today we discussed the use of metaphors in writing and reviewed similes.

Writing

Tomorrow the Owls will do a lesson with Miss Joy covering how starting sentences in different ways increases fluency and interest in readers.  They will focus on the book Dizzy, a biography based on the famous jazz musician Dizzy Gillespie.  We’ve been experiencing jazz this month.  Last week, we learned about Louis Armstrong!

Same spelling and vocabulary words from last week!  Thanks to a week without Homework.  Bring binders on Thursday

Vocabulary Words

Melancholy

To be very sad.  The preacher said the Litmus Lozenge tasted melancholy and made him very sad.  It made him miss his wife.

Pumice

Igneous rocks that formed when lava cooled above ground.  You can see the holes where the lava bubbled.  These holes make pumice very porous and able to float on water.

Doubt

To not believe something.  Thomas had doubt that Jesus had risen from the dead until Jesus appeared to him and let him touch his hand and side.

Sleuth

A person who figures things out by searching for clues.  A sleuth can also be another word for a detective.

Pentecost

The feast that comes 50 days after Easter and celebrates when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles.  Pentecost is considered the beginning of the Christian church because that is when over 3,000 people were baptized and went out to spread the Good News.

Emmaus

The road where Saul was knocked off his horse by Jesus and blinded.  On the road to Emmaus, Jesus said,  “Saul, Saul Why are you persecuting me?”  Soon after that Saul changed his name to Paul and began telling people about Jesus.

Math

We finished our money unit yesterday and will take the assessment tomorrow.  We did a real fun review today where teams earned different money amounts for correct answers and had to use their money skills to add them up!  Coming up next is fractions!  We’re excited about that!

In this chapter, your child will be introduced to the concept of fractions. Some of the skills your child will practice are:

·         reading, writing, and identifying unit fractions for halves, thirds, and fourths

·          drawing models to show fractions and a whole

·         comparing and ordering unit fractions

·         adding and subtracting like fractions

See the attached School to Home Connection I’ve attached for more information about this unit including important vocabulary and ways you can reinforce the concepts at home.

Science

We’re wrapping up our Geology Unit with fun learning games with the 3rd grade.  Next Monday is our test!  We’re finishing up the year with a look at Biodiversity.

Social Studies

We’re wrapping up our map unit this week.  Today the last of the pirate booty was hidden and found.  It was a great way to wrap up things up.  It truly showed the students why it is important to know how to make and read a map.  I really hope they leave this unit able to recognize their cardinal directions North, South, East and West!  It has been a struggle but I think maybe we’ll get there!

Geology Rocks!

Please have your child bring in their costume tomorrow Wednesday.  (For most it is just a t-shirt.  See my previous e-mail for exact description.)  I really want to see what we have in case I have to pull something out of my “Cabinet of Necessity”  (You Harry Potter fans know what I mean.).

Looks like we’ve got cookies covered.  Thank you Nicole, Christy, Corey and Shannon!

Thursday, April 18th

9:30-10:00   First performance

2:30-3:00    2nd performance w/ wrap party to follow

About costumes:  We’re going simple and letting our talent shine and our mommies relax!  Here is a rundown of what we came up with:

Rosie and Jenn-dress like little girls (what a stretch!)

Sherlock Holmes-I think I’ve got a trenchcoat or jacket and a magnifying   glass.  Anyone out there have an appropriate hat?

Volcanoes- Regular pants and red shirts
Ferns- Regular bottoms and green shirts
Valley-Ashlyn’s choice-bright(!)
Mountains-jeans and dark blue or brown shirts
Snow White-Snow White costume (I may buy it off of you when it is no longer useful to your family.)
Professor Rock-jeans, vest.  (I’ve got a hat and glasses for him.)

That about covers it.  Do NOT go spending money on this unless it is something you can reuse.  Clothes that are borrowed from parents or siblings is great!  (That is why God made safety pins!)

Video Tapes- Senora Saucer has graciously volunteered to tape the 2nd performance for us and is willing to make copies for anyone interested at a cost of $2 (to cover cost of CDs and a little bit of her time).  Let me know by e-mail if you would like a copy and we’ll hook you up and you are free to relax and enjoy the show without having to worry about taping it yourself.

Children of Hope Sunday

I sent out a Perfect Potluck invite to you.  It served two purposes.  One was a sign up for Children of Hope Sunday on April 21st.  There are 7 spots for the first service and 7 for the second service in order to make sure we don’t overload a service.  Children need to arrive by 8:15  (go to 1st grade classroom) and plan to stay until @10:30 for the BIGGEST, BEST AND FIRST CROSS OF HOPE PRAYER CIRCLE!  Children need to arrive by 9:50 for the second service to join in the BIGGEST, BEST AND FIRST CROSS OF HOPE PRAYER CIRCLE.  The 2nd service typically ends @12:00.  100% participation is the expectation because not only is this a fantastic and fun way to worship God with our church and school family but it is also the way we as a school community thank the church for their support which makes our school possible.

Reading

Expand Vocabulary- I know, find, and use interesting words.”

  • Tune into Interesting Words:  We are excited to learn new words and figure out what words mean. When this happens at school, the word is explained and then added to our Word Collector.  We refer back to the words often as this will deepen their understanding of them and expand their vocabularies.  Perhaps you could keep a notebook at home to jot down interesting words that you and your child come across when reading.
  • Voracious Reading: This is a strategy that we used to get excited about reading and finding new words while we read. Reading takes practice and is something we must do a lot to be able to read our best. We want to read as much as we can to get better in reading!
  • Ask for help defining the word: Student can ask another person (adult or other student) if they come across a word they do not know. The student records the word and page number on a new words chart and then can ask when reading time is over (if it is silent reading time).
  • Use a tool- dictionary, thesaurus, or glossary: The student can use a dictionary as a tool when they don’t know a word while reading.
  • Use other words to help (context) and prior knowledge: Students can use words within the rest of the sentence or paragraph to know what a word means.

Math

We’re working hard on Mental Addition and Subtraction of two and three digit numbers.  We really needed to review the terms  sum and difference.  You could provide your child opportunities to practice in the car.  Ask them what is the difference between 74 and 36?  Talk them through how you would work it out in your head.  What is the sum of 12 and 9?

Geology Rocks

We will perform Geology Rocks next Thursday, April 18th.  Students will need to practice and have their lines memorized by the end of this week.  We’ll have a “rap” party after the 2:30 performance.

Spelling/Vocabulary Words

Spelling Bee

Friday at 3:45, Immanuel Lutheran School :  All are invited to come cheer on our representatives.  If Holly, John or Emilio can’t make it, please let me know ASAP because Mia is practicing and good to go!  They will have dinner available to purchase or you may choose to check out some of the many great restaurants in the area.  Parking is limited so get there early!

Vocabulary Words

Term, phrase

Definition

Simile

A simile is a figure of speech used to compare two different things. It usually includes the words like and as.  For example, she was as quick as a cricket.

Idiom

A common way of saying something that compares very different things.  For example, it was raining cats and dogs means it was raining hard.

Cliché

A popular way of saying something that has been used too much and people have gotten tired of it. An example might be “what goes around comes around.

Geologist

A scientist who studies the earth.

Sum

The answer you get when you add two numbers together.

Difference

The answer you get one you subtract a smaller number from a larger number.

Writing

We have been writing like crazy!  Holly and Evie adapted a story from our Christian Studies book into a skit for our chapel on Wednesday.  Mia and Micaiah did the same thing creating a puppet show!  Nick and Jackson are busy writing a Lollipop Land story.  We are creating a class simile book for a special project!

Common Writing Question:  What do I do about my child’s handwriting and spelling?

Answer:  Encourage them to read and write a lot!  The more they are exposed to quality literature the more they will value writing conventions.  However, if too much emphasis is put on conventions you run the risk of stifling their creativity and desire to write.  Spelling and handwriting are often the easiest errors for adults to spot yet the reality is that they are a small part of the whole.  Remember back when your child was learning to walk rather than telling your child,  don’t waddle so much!  Stand up straight!  Watch your posture!” you gave them lots of encouragement and opportunities to practice.
