The 3rd and 4th grade students at Cross of Hope Lutheran Elementary School took part in a bean soup service project that incorporated many aspects of economics, government, math, and language arts. The students researched, counted, measured, tested, measured again, packaged, advertised, and sold their product, donating all proceeds to charity. On February 11, Eleanor Smith, Team in Training, accepted our check for $110.00. This is their story:
Bean Madness by the Funky Fireflies
The Funky Fireflies counted over 22,955 mixed beans and they weighed over 20 pounds.
We all brought cookbooks to do research on bean soup recipes. We narrowed down the recipes to three: Black Bean Soup, White Bean Soup, and Chili. Groups made the crockpot recipes to taste test and we all agreed the Chili was the best soup.
Fireflies voted on a name by secret ballot and the result was Crazy Funky Wild Chili. The Fireflies voted to donate the profits to Team in Training Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Fireflies started packaging the bean soup and everybody took part in the factory floor. There were groups of three that got spices ready and measured beans. We put them in packages to sell. After that, we made posters to advertise the sale.
This soup sold fast as lightning. The sale dates were December 13 and 14. It was all sold out, so Sunday’s sale was cancelled. We made over $100.00 to donate to Team in Training.
